Glenavon 'didn't work hard' against Blues - O'Connor

Glenavon manager Michael O'Connor said his side "didn't do the basics of football" during their 3-0 loss against Linfield.

Two goals from Matthew Fitzpatrick and Sam Taylor's strike secured the three points for Linfield, who have struggled away from home this season.

Saturday's Irish Premiership results mean that the Lurgan Blues are now 10 points adrift at the bottom of the table.

"I actually thought we started well. Once Fitzy got the first goal for them, we were second best all over the pitch. To be honest, you try to stay as positive as possible, but it looked like the boys had given up; it's unacceptable," O'Connor told BBC Sport NI.

"It's the second half, you go out 1-0 down, you're still in the game and it's really important to start quickly and get on the front foot. From our own kick-off in the second half, within 15 seconds, they were attacking our goal, which set the tone.

"We didn't compete, we didn't win first or second balls, and we didn't do the basics of football today. We didn't work hard or compete. I said on Tuesday I wanted a reaction and today was actually worse than Tuesday."

O'Connor continued to criticise his side's reaction after conceding the opening goal in the 32nd minute and added their response was not good enough.

"There are no leaders in there. None at all. Once the goal went in, you could see heads dropping," O'Connor continued.

"Players were scared to get on the ball, didn't want to run in behind and didn't want to compete.

"It just got worse as the game went on. That's nowhere near good enough."

As for Linfield assistant manager Ross Oliver, he said that he was delighted with how striker Fitzpatrick performed against his former club.

"Fitzpatrick is a key player," Oliver told BBC Sport NI.

"Everyone in the club, the staff and the other players all know how important he is to us - not only for scoring goals but also for the way he gets us into games when he's not scoring.

"I'm delighted for him, delighted for the whole team and that win today was more for themselves than anything else."
