No. 25 Texas A&M (3-0) completed the Opening Weekend sweep against Tennessee Tech, defeating the visitors 7-1 behind sophomore starting pitcher Aiden Sims' first start of the year, while star outfielder Caden Sorrell delivered four hits, including his tenth RBI of the season.
Sims, who was by far the biggest question mark heading into the weekend, looked calm and in control no matter the situation, delivering early back-to-back strikeouts, which only built up his confidence going into the latter innings.
Lasting six innings, Sims struck out seven, allowing just one hit and one run after 84 pitches. In his relief, Clayton Freshcorn made his long-awaited appearance after his memorable performance against eventual National Champion LSU during the SEC Tournament, striking out four, allowing two hits, and zero runs to close out the 7-1 win.
At the plate, Maryland transfer Chris Hacopian was deemed unavailable due to an unspecified illness, which did not slow down Texas A&M's offense one bit. Delivering 12 hits, led by Sorrell's four, the Aggies struck out just five times, while Baylor transfer Wesley Jordan continued to make contact on nearly every pitch, delivering the first run of the game on an RBI single in the first, paired with his double in the 6th, which sent Sorrell home to build a 6-1 lead.
Leading the Aggies with an impressive 2.780 OPS, Jordan's previous injury issues are likely the only reason he's not playing in the minor league, bringing obvious power at 6'3" and over 225 pounds to the plate, but he has consistently delivered at DH, getting on base on nearly every at-bat.
Defensively, an early throwing error from freshman shortstop Boston Kellner, combined with a poor throw to first from Aiden Sims, was the only issue, as the defense tightened up, including Caden Sorrell's diving catch that we've all grown accustomed to over the years.
Texas A&M has not answered any questions yet, but so far, the offense has not had to rely on home runs, proving that during today's cloudy post-storm afternoon, and even without Hacopian in the lineup, 12 hits and seven runs are another step in the right direction.
Texas A&M's starting pitching rotation still has ways to go, but with coach Michael Earley and his staff, it can consistently get clean innings from Shane Sdao, Weston Moss, Aiden Sims, and Clayton Freshcorn. Veteran Josh Stewart is waiting in the wings as the likely closer once the competition increases.
Texas A&M will host A&M Corpus-Christi on Tuesday night on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The game will be available to stream on SEC Network+.
