Richard Hughes cannot take £61m risk as new asking price for defender emerges

Liverpool linked with move for Juventus' Gleison Bremer

Unfortunately for Liverpool fans, the rest of their 2025-26 season and most of the summer transfer window will be spent linking them with new defenders.

The Reds need one or two new additions in that department in the upcoming transfer window and now, Gleison Bremer is garnering interest from the Anfield outfit.

The Brazilian has long been linked with a Liverpool move but, a fresh report from Calcio Mercato has said that his transfer would cost the club around £61 million.

For a defender of his quality, this doesn't seem like all that much but, when his age and injury history is taken into account, it feels like it would be a massive gamble from Slot and Hughes.

Even though it's clear that Liverpool need to bring in some defensive reinforcements this summer, Bremer is not the player that they should be targeting.

The centre-back is 28 years old and has never played in the Premier League.

Indeed, he has played for the Brazilian national team a few times but the fact that his international appearances aren't in double figures says all you need to know.

Throughout his entire career, he's spent 71 games on the sidelines due to injury and, with Liverpool already spending £55 million on Jeremy Jacquet, their next defensive addition needs to be a proven and consistent player.

If Hughes chose to make a move for Bremer, it would be rather confusing, especially with the way their recruitment has gone over the last few windows.

One of the Reds' main goals is to plan well ahead for the future and, on the face of things, bringing Bremer in would just be a stop-gap solution which is not what the club need at the moment.

That is, especially if he's going to cost them over £60 million to bring in.
