Should Lamine Yamal’s penalty for Barcelona against Girona have been retaken?

Lamine Yamal passed up the chance to give Barcelona the lead against Girona on Monday night in La Liga as he missed a penalty after Dani Olmo had been fouled.

The teenager stepped up to take the kick but could only watch in agony as it hit the post and rebounded to safety.

Yet television replays have suggested that the kick should have been retaken.

It looks as though Bryan Gil was encroaching when the kick was taken, and he was then quick to contest the rebound with Frenkie de Jong.

The penalty is the third missed by Barcelona this season, meaning no team in La Liga have missed more than Hansi Flick’s side.

Former referee and analyst at Carrusel Deportivo, Edu Iturralde González, has analysed the incident and argued:

“Bryan Gil and De Jong both enter the box and contest the ball. If a penalty is retaken because the goalkeeper moves forward by a millimeter, this one has to be retaken because both players enter the box early and the ball ends up in their area.”
