Finland uses late comeback to stun Switzerland, reach semifinals

By the skin of its teeth, Finland remains alive.

The reigning Olympic champions overcame a late 2-0 deficit to shock Switzerland with a 3-2 overtime victory in the men’s hockey quarterfinals on Wednesday in Milan.

Artturi Lehkonen was the hero with the OT winner in the three-on-three extra frame.

Finland was trailing by two and struggling to beat Swiss goalie Leonardo Genoni late before Sebastian Aho broke the seal with a snipe from the dot with about six minutes remaining, bringing his team within one.

Then, with just over one minute on the clock, defenceman Miro Heiskanen sifted a wrist shot through traffic and into the back of the net to force overtime.

Switzerland jumped to an early lead in a 75-second span in the first period thanks to Damien Riat and Nino Niederreiter.

Finland joins Canada and Slovakia in the semifinals, which will take place Friday. The final team and matchups will be determined by the U.S.-Sweden quarterfinal later Wednesday.

If the U.S. wins, Finland would face Canada. If the Swedes pull it out, the Finns would get the Americans.

The gold-medal game is slated for Sunday, closing out competition at these Olympics.
