Friday Night Lights: Nienaber’s last dance with Leinster?
Friday night’s Vodacom URC final against the Bulls could mark Jacques Nienaber’s last match in Leinster colours. djcc.club
The former Springbok coach still has a year remaining on his contract, but recent events have cast serious doubt over whether he will remain in Dublin beyond this season.
Nienaber won two World Cups – including as head coach in 2023 – before joining Leinster, but he has become a lightning rod for criticism in Ireland following another failed European campaign.
Leinster reached the Investec Champions Cup final but were destroyed by defending champions Bordeaux Bègles, prompting renewed scrutiny of Nienaber’s defensive system and overall influence on the team.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: The captain carrying Leinster’s burden
In an explosive press conference earlier this month, Nienaber admitted he was uncertain about his future at the Irish province, saying he did not feel valued and suggesting public and media sentiment could ultimately determine whether he stays or goes.
Asked directly if he would be staying, the 53-year-old responded: “Your question is, am I going to be here? I hope so. Currently, I’m not sure, to be honest, because people don’t value me here. They don’t.”
O’BRIEN: Leinster, Bulls peaked at right time
Leinster overcame a shock Champions Cup semi-final loss to Northampton last season to win the URC title against the Bulls at Croke Park.
The Irish giants will have to repeat that feat to salvage a season that once again brought European heartache. Leinster have now lost five finals since last winning the title in 2017-18.
Whether a second consecutive URC title will be enough to silence the critics and convince Nienaber to stay remains to be seen.

Sélectionneur et attaquant ont décidé de ne pas s’exprimer sur le conflit géopolitique qui oppose l’Iran et les États-Unis alors qu’un accord de paix entre les deux pays devait être signé dans les prochaines 24 heures selon le Pakistan. «Nous sommes ici pour jouer au football, nous respectons tous les Iraniens. Il faut séparer le foot et la politique», a souligné le tacticien iranien. Un discours répété à l’identique par Taremi : «J’aimerais dire que nous respectons tous les Iraniens, mais je suis là pour jouer au football». Le joueur de l’Olympiakos a toutefois eu une pensée pour Omar Artan : «Ce n’est pas seulement l’Iran qui est affecté sur cette Coupe du monde, c’est aussi les arbitres… Normalement la Coupe du monde c’est la paix et la joie… J’espère que dans le futur, ça sera meilleur pour tous les fans».

African side brutally sack coach after FIFA World Cup 2026 defeat
Tunisia have responded to their 5-1 FIFA World Cup thrashing by Sweden by sacking coach Sabri Lamouchi and replacing him with Frenchman Herve Renard, the federation announced on national TV late on Monday.
Renard coached Saudi Arabia to a shock win against eventual winners Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and has since coached the France women’s team.
Take charge
“The president of the Tunisian Football Federation, Moez Nassari, announced that an official agreement had been reached with French coach Herve Renard for him to take charge of the national football team until the end of the 2026 World Cup,” the Tunisian public broadcaster announced.
Lamouchi, a former French international, had only been in charge since January.
The heavy defeat by Sweden on Sunday leaves Tunisia with a tough task to reach the knockout round.
They face Japan in their next FIFA World Cup Group F match on Sunday, 21 June (06:00 SA time) and will conclude their group-stage commitments against The Netherlands on Friday, 26 June at 01:00 (SA time).
Tunisia were ranked 45th in the FIFA rankings prior to their defeat against Sweden, but are currently scheduled to drop to 56th place.
