Hansen lands new coaching gig

The legendary Steve Hansen has embarked on a new rugby chapter in Australia.

The World Cup-winning All Blacks boss joined Manly Sea Eagles as football performance director Friday in a coup for the Australian National Rugby League side. beltedkingfisher.blog

Hansen lost just 10 of the 107 New Zealand Tests he oversaw during his reign from 2012 to 2019 and steered them to World Cup glory.

Since leaving the All Blacks, the 67-year-old New Zealander has been focused on strategic leadership, mentoring and high-performance development, including roles in Japanese rugby union.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Manly Sea Eagles and to be part of a club that is steeped in history, success and a strong sporting identity,” said Hansen.

He will work closely with rookie head coach Kieran Foran and CEO Jason King.

“He is one of the greatest sporting minds of his generation and I am incredibly excited to work with him and learn from him,” said Foran, who is in his first coaching job.

HANSEN: All Blacks not in the hunt up front

“Steve brings an incredible level of experience and insight, and I know he will challenge all of us to think bigger, raise our standards and become better.”

Manly finished ninth on the 17-team NRL ladder this season.

Hansen is following in the footsteps of other rugby union heavyweights to join the NRL with former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika assisting at the Sydney Roosters this season.

Boks can punish weary All Blacks

The Springboks must capitalise on their continuity and freshness to deny a battle-weary All Blacks team the consolation of squaring Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series in Baltimore, writes MARK KEOHANE.

Writing for TimesLIVE, Keohane believes the physical cost of New Zealand’s eight-match tour is becoming increasingly apparent, while the Boks head into the final Test with settled combinations and momentum after successive victories at Cape Town Stadium and FNB Stadium.

“The Springboks’ motivation must be to deny them the consolation,” he writes.

The All Blacks will be without three players who started the third Test at FNB Stadium. Captain Ardie Savea has a dislocated shoulder, Luke Jacobson an elbow injury and Quinn Tupaea knee-ligament damage, while Anton Segner was lost earlier in the tour after ankle surgery.

Keohane says the mood around the tourists has consequently shifted since their opening Test victory at Ellis Park, with the challenge now increasingly about enduring the final stages of an old-fashioned tour.

“The All Blacks remain dangerous, but they are no longer fresh and they are no longer controlling the series narrative,” he writes. “The Boks are.”

In contrast, Rassie Erasmus has retained 22 of the 23 players involved in the 29-24 victory at FNB Stadium, with fit-again Damian Willemse replacing the injured Cheslin Kolbe. Keohane believes that continuity has helped sharpen the Boks’ defence and decision-making while restoring their dominance at the set-piece.

WATCH: All Blacks avoid scrum battle

The All Blacks conceded 12 penalties at FNB Stadium, allowing South Africa to repeatedly turn their indiscipline into territory and attacking opportunities, and Keohane expects the Boks to again make their physical advantage count in Baltimore.

“Baltimore won’t be as close and will mirror the second half of the Soweto Test when the Boks, as the No 1 team in the world, showed there is still daylight between them and the chasing pack, led by the All Blacks,” he concludes.

Six refugee athletes will make their debut at this year’s Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, in what will be a first for both the continent and the refugee team.

The Games, scheduled to run from October 31 to November 13, will be hosted in Africa for the first time. The refugee team will compete in athletics, judo and taekwondo.

Comprising Rashid Rechene, Florence Masimbi, Clement Niyomuhoza, Nyataba Kuek, Lourance Namukiza, and Arno Yfunga, the team has pitched camp in Kenya’s Uasin Gishu County, where marathon great Eliud Kipchoge and other top Kenyan athletes train.

The athletes met Kipchoge, the double Olympic champion who praised the initiative.

“I’m really feeling good to be associated with refugees. Above all is to change their minds not to believe and treat themselves as refugees, so that’s my happiness. By actually succeeding to change their minds to believe in themselves to know that they have the same capabilities as other athletes,” Kipchoge said.

The athletes have been drawn from Kakuma Refugee Camp in northern Kenya and Uganda.

“These athletes you’re seeing here, as the National Olympic Committee, we are looking at the bigger picture beyond sports. We are just using sports as a platform to help them achieve their visions in life,” National Olympic Committee of Kenya Secretary General John Ogola said of the initiative.

“This year we are going to have the Youth Olympics in Senegal, in Dakar of course, and that’s why we are here to make sure that that team is given all the support and preparation that is required to go and compete not only participating,” Barnaba Korir, the First Deputy President of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK), said.

“But we want them to show the world that, yes, as much as they go through a lot of problems, they have also been integrated into our system so that the other parts of the world where they will introduce refugee teams can see what Kenya has done and adopt the same system.”

The International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Refuge Foundation have brought the team together with support from the National Olympic Committees of Kenya and Uganda, World Athletics, Athletics Kenya, UNHCR, and the national judo and taekwondo federations.
