Cricket teams competing at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are free to “arrange their own accommodation” if they choose not to stay in hotels provided by the organisers, Japan Cricket Association CEO Naoki Alex Miyaji has confirmed.

The clarification comes against the backdrop of reports suggesting that some participating cricket boards have raised concerns over the accommodation and facilities available at the Games. The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Organising Committee (AINAGOC) responded to the reports by insisting that suitable accommodation had been arranged for all participants.

Miyaji offered further clarity on the accommodation arrangements, pointing out that cricket teams have been given access to hotels, while contingents from several other sports are being housed in more unconventional and restricted settings.

“The ACC has been discussing accommodation options with AINAGOC [Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Organising Committee] for a long time,” Miyaji told PTI. “The participating teams in cricket are being offered hotel accommodation. Many other sports are being accommodated in much more limited facilities, such as a cruise ship or container hotels. The teams are free to arrange their own accommodation if they choose to do so.”

Miyaji also outlined the arrangements being made to ensure that players have the necessary facilities throughout the tournament.

“Toilets will be available within the player area,” he said. “There are both temporary and permanent facilities at the venue. The facilities on the ground are temporary, but AINAGOC has worked very closely with the ACC for over a year now to ensure that the best facilities are provided within the limited timeline and facility restrictions.”

Nisshin’s Korogi Sports Park will host the cricket matches. Miyaji is confident that the curators sent by Sri Lanka Cricket will be able to provide good playing surfaces for the men’s and women’s tournaments.

“It will be a full-size ground with turf and hybrid pitches prepared by the best curators, which Sri Lanka Cricket should be credited for providing,” said Miyaji. “There are limits on what they can do within these tight constraints, but from what I have seen, the playing surface and field will be the best seen (since) cricket’s inclusion in the Asian Games.”

Cricket will kick off the Asian Games on September 17, with the sport getting underway two days before the official opening ceremony on September 19. The women’s T20 tournament will run until September 22, while the men’s competition is scheduled from September 24 to October 3.
