Atanasio Girardot Stadium to undergo massive renovation

Medellín's Mayor Federico Gutiérrez confirmed the Atanasio Girardot Stadium will undergo a major structural renovation, forcing Atlético Nacional and Independiente Medellín to find a temporary home for the 2026-2027 season.

The ambitious project aims to expand the stadium's capacity to 60,000 and modernize its infrastructure. Construction is slated to begin in late July 2026, with a target completion date of December 2027.

However, the renovation poses significant challenges for the clubs, particularly regarding international tournament logistics. Smaller venues like the Polideportivo Sur may not meet Conmebol's requirements for Copa Libertadores or Sudamericana matches.
