The decade-old fantasy fight between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano is finally becoming a reality. The two women's MMA pioneers shocked the sporting world Tuesday, both announcing intentions to come out of retirement for May 16 superfight atop a Jake Paul-promoted MMA card live on Netflix.

It's a stunning development for two trailblazers who have been away from MMA for a combined 25 years. Rousey, 39, last competed in a loss to Amanda Nunes in late 2016, while Carano, 43, hung up her four-ounce gloves in 2009 following a loss to Cris Cyborg. Nonetheless, Rousey and Carano remain two of the most influential and well-known fighters in women's MMA history.

Said Rousey of Tuesday's announcement:

“Been waiting so long to announce this. Me and Gina Carano are gonna throw down in the biggest superfight in women’s combat sport history, and we’re partnering with the fighter-first promoter, MVP, as well as the baddest streamer on the planet, Netflix. This is for all MMA fans past, present, and future.”

Added Carano:

“Ronda came to me and said there is only one person she would make a comeback for, and it’s been her dream to make this fight happen between us.”

Rousey vs. Carano is expected to take place as a five-round featherweight (145 pounds) fight at Los Angeles' Intuit Dome. Paul's Most Valuable Promotions will promote the card, which also serves as the first MMA card to air live on Netflix.
