Video reviews in the NHL just got a major upgrade.
The NHL announced on Wednesday that it has installed four new ultra-HD cameras in all 32 arenas as part of a new multi-year partnership with technology and entertainment company Cosm.
Cosm’s C360 Capture Systems adds four 10.5K ultra-high resolution cameras to each arena, installed at the glass level behind each net and on each blue line
According to a press release, “The ultra-high resolution footage captured by Cosm Media utilizes the NHL’s Puck and Player Tracking data (NHL EDGE), which allows the NHL to isolate, enhance, and utilize the footage to aid the League’s instant replay review process, player safety initiatives, official statistic tracking and auditing, digital and social media content creation, and more.”
Those cameras were put to work on the first night of NHL action after the Olympic break. In the first period between the Maple Leafs and Lightning, Toronto successfully challenged two Tampa Bay goals for offside and footage from the cameras along the blue line was used in both reviews.
“Integrating Cosm’s C360 camera technology into our arenas helps us continue to deliver our game in the best way possible and brings fans even closer to the speed and thrill of NHL action,” NHL COO Stephen McArdle said in a statement. “The immersive perspectives captured by Cosm’s system provides premium content across our entire ecosystem — for our fans, coaches, officials, broadcast partners, and more.”
