Former Ajax head coach Maurice Steijn and Sparta Rotterdam set to part ways in the summer

Sparta Rotterdam have announced that head coach Maurice Steijn will be leaving the club at the end of the summer. Despite discussions between Steijn and the club over the past few weeks, it has been decided that Sparta Rotterdam will look to bring in a new head coach in the summer. Steijn also indicated that he is looking for a change of scenery in the summer. The side are currently seventh in the Eredivisie.

Steijn, who had a brief spell in charge of Ajax after leaving Sparta Rotterdam in 2023, returned to the club in November 2024. During his first time in charge, the head coach won 22 games, drawing 11 and losing 11 with a points per game record of 1.8. He earned the chance to manage Ajax, but struggled with just two wins in 11 games, a run of results that saw him sacked. Since returning to Sparta Rotterdam in 2024, Steijn has helped the side to finish 12th. So far this season he has won 11 Eredivisie games and the club are hoping to finish in the European play offs.

Steijn has managed a number of clubs in the Netherlands, including ADO Den Haag, who look set for a return to the top flight, as well as VVV-Venlo and NAC Breda. In 2019 he had a short spell in charge of Al-Wahda in the United Arab Emirates.
