Colts’ Ward is facing a life-altering decision

Charvarius Ward was the big offseason prize for the Indianapolis Colts. Chris Ballard finally went out and spent in free agency, and all signs pointed to Ward being the answer to shoring up the Colts’ porous defensive backfield. When he was on the field, Ward was that guy. He looked like a true number one. The issue was that he wasn’t able to stay on the field due to a string of concussions which has set him up with a life-altering decision.

After suffering three concussions, one of which was in the freakiest of styles when he was taken out by his teammate in pregame warmups, Ward has been putting some serious thought into whether to return in 2026 or to hang it up. Indications are that Ward is returning to the Colts, but nothing is set in stone. Whatever he chooses could have huge ramifications.

On one hand, choosing to retire means cutting his career short. A dream he has worked towards for most of his life would be abruptly over. Money, pride, prestige, and camaraderie would all be sacrificed. On the other hand, a return to a violent game could have long-term effects. He suffered horrible headaches after the second concussion and CTE has to be in the back of his mind. Brains aren’t built to be concussed every few months. Missing ten games proves those injuries are of concern. Concussions are serious and could leave Ward with more issues than just “missing out” were he to continue and suffer further damage.

The obvious hope is that Charvarius Ward comes back and is concussion free. It isn’t a guarantee he would suffer one ever again. Fans want to see him play because he is a great player who can really make a difference. Ward, himself, wants to keep playing. There is no doubt of that. What people want to do and what they should do can be two different things, though. If Ward ultimately comes back in 2026, everyone will have to hold their breath and hope for the best.
