VIDEO: Angelo State Rambelles begin quest for Lone Star Conference Tournament title

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Angelo State Rambelles look to continue their remarkable in-season turnaround.

It’s March, which means college basketball’s most magical time of the year has arrived. The Angelo State Rambelles officially departed Wednesday morning for the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Dallas, Texas. Angelo State has earned itself an opportunity that seemed impossible three months ago.

After a 1-4 start in conference play, ASU has turned its season around. The Rambelles are 12-3 in the LSC since Jan 8; the team notably recorded a 10-game winning streak during that span. Angelo State is the six seed heading into the eight-team bracket, set to face three seed UT Tyler in the opening quarterfinal round. Rambelles head coach Alesha Ellis and her team have embraced the long journey since day one.

“We’ve always told our players it’s just all about the journey and the process,” Ellis said. “We’ve got a full realm of that this year. We’ve gone through just about everything, and I’m blessed to have the type of players that are going to step up with any kind of problem that we have.”

Two Rambelle athletes also received All-Conference honors just two days ahead of the tournament. Sophomore guard Majik Esquivel and senior guard Landry Morrow were named to first and third team, respectively. These two players have also embraced the journey since the beginning, and Esquivel has high confidence with this group.

“We faced a lot of adversity within the team, we overcame a lot and I’m just really proud of us and the way we’ve just bounced back,” Esquivel said. “It just shows how strong we are because we had a horrible start and we’re the hottest team in the conference now and probably the scariest to play.”

The turnaround required some in-season adjustments, but Morrow has embraced senior leadership in guiding her team to this point.

“It’s just been a learning process from the very beginning,” Morrow said. “We had a lot of returners and we brought in some new people, but we just had to piece it all together. I think that’s what it was from the start, just trying to find our pieces and work with what we got.”

Angelo State’s opening LSC Quarterfinal game tips off Friday, March 6 at 12 p.m. CST at the Comerica Center in Dallas, Texas.
