Rory McIlroy handled rain and 20-plus mph winds at Riviera Country Club with ease, carding a 5-under 66 to open the Genesis Invitational. The world No. 3 birdied his first three holes before a three-hour rain delay, then birdied his first shot after the break to maintain momentum.
McIlroy made an impressive par save at the sixth hole by chipping from the green, and despite a bogey at the 16th, he bounced back with a birdie on the 17th to briefly share the lead. Aaron Rai eventually passed him with a late birdie before play was suspended due to darkness.
