In John Harbaugh's new organizational structure, the rest of the building now reports to Aponte, who technically replaces Kevin Abrams with the same title but with more responsibilities. Aponte is responsible for "strategic planning for football operations, analytics, salary cap management, player contract negotiations, compliance and working closely with the college and pro personnel departments."
Sources had expected Harbaugh would either want Schoen out or reduce his role significantly, and those predictions have come true quickly. Harbaugh needed final say and a direct report to ownership to sign his contract, and he has made clear who is in charge. While Harbaugh will have final say in personnel matters, he still needs someone overseeing the scouting process, which is now Schoen's primary responsibility.
